The Biggest Mistake Pinterest Business Beginners Make

First thing - hats off to you for diving into marketing your business on Pinterest! You are investing time in a long term strategy on a platform with an audience who is ready and waiting for new ideas, products, and inspiration.

HOW TO GET YOUR PINS SEEN ON PINTEREST.png

But let me guess, you’ve created some pins and get discouraged when you see them fall flat. Low impressions, low Link Clicks, and low Saves. I’m willing to bet that I know what the problem is. Why am I so confident in this? Because I’ve seen SO MANY incredible businesses who have valuable content perfect for Pinterest make this one mistake.

Outside of changing pin designs or pinning strategically this is the BIGGEST mistake I see Pinterest beginners make is…not using keywords. More specifically not keyword optimizing.

So often I see great intentions with pin design, but guess what? They won’t be found without proper keywords included in the Pin Title and Pin Description! You should also be including them in your profile as well - but I’ll save that one for later.

It feels counter to what Pinterest is right? It’s a VISUAL search engine. So you put all this time and effort into creating your pins - which is great! - but no one will ever see those pins without the proper keywords. Pinterest is referred to as a search and discovery platform.

I want you to change it up a bit and instead think of it as a search THEN discovery platform.

Pinners have to search before they can come across your beautiful eye-catching pin! Of course, there is always the Home feed as well but that’s all based on things Pinners have previously searched for.

Remember, the key is in the keywords!

So here’s what you can do:

  1. Start typing keywords related to your niche in Pinterest search bar

  2. Explore which related keywords show up in the search drop down or in guided search.

  3. Keep track of your initial keywords and any subsequent keywords that are related to your niche and business.

  4. Start including those keywords (and combine them to make long-tail keywords) in every aspect of your Pinterest game: Pin Titles, Pin Descriptions, Board Names, Board Descriptions, and the About section of your profile. Even the text in your Pins should include keywords!

  5. Don’t be an imposter! Don’t cloak yourself in keywords that do not relate to the content you’re linking to or else Pinners may realize you aren’t serving them the content they were looking for.

Get ready to wear all those keywords like it’s your signature look. Like people KNOW you for what your keywords stand for. Like Pinterest knows you are a go-to for source for when someone types in “Handmade Montessori wooden toys for toddlers” or “Edible sensory bin filler ideas for toddlers.” Become an authority with your keywords and killer content that serves your ideal audience and you will see those numbers start to increase. Pinterest is a long-term investment though. Don’t get discouraged two weeks, one month, or even several months in. It takes approximately 3-6 months to start seeing results.
